Agnolo Gaddi, Pietà e Santi

1375-95
Church of Santa Maria Novella, Florence

The title used in the church's label makes it a Pietà. I prefer the term "Lamentation," which distinguishes it from the kind of Pietà in which Jesus' body is posed on Mary's lap. Here he is laid out on a rock platform that appears to be a way of referencing the "rock-hewn tomb" of the synoptic gospels.

At the far left, Joseph of Arimathea has brought the linen burial cloth that he has purchased. The man on his left is most likely Nicodemus, who appears only in John's gospel. Being a member of the Sanhedrin he is pictured as an observant Jew with side locks and verses from the Torah attached to his headpiece.

St. John is on the right. No other men are mentioned in the gospels, so we would have to guess that the man standing behind the women and the one kissing Jesus' foot are apostles.

As for the women, Mary Magdalene is on the left with her long, blond hair. Two other women console Jesus' mother Mary.
